“Turning 18 in Virginia: What Individuals with Disabilities and Their Families Need to Know”

Wednesday, January 6, 2021 | 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

An 18-year-old is legally considered an adult in Virginia. Therefore, when a child turns 18, he/she is the person who makes legal, financial, medical, and educational decisions in his/her life. For some individuals with disabilities, this is not an issue. Others may need support. This workshop will share basic information about things that need to be considered as you or your loved one approaches age 18. After graduating from Virginia Tech, Tammy Burns taught 5th grade in public schools until her second son was diagnosed with autism. Changing her career path, Ms. Burns received her Master of Education in curriculum and instruction with a concentration in autism spectrum disorders from Arizona State. Since that time, she has been in many leadership positions in disability-related nonprofits and served on several local and state advocacy groups as well as advisory boards; she now works at the Parent Educational Advocacy Training Center (PEATC), Virginia’s parent training center.
